Born to a middle-class Protestant family, Bazille met Monet, Renoir and Sisley at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1862.  His Family Reunion was exhibited at the 1868 Salon.  He served in the army during the Franco-Prussian War and was killed at Beaune-la-Rolande in 1870.
